The International Baccalaureate Program (I.B.) was founded in 1967, in Geneva, Switzerland, where the foundation is still headquartered. Children of diplomats and families of corporate executives relocating in different countries required access to standardized quality education that would receive recognition worldwide. Responding to this need, international educators gathered to agree on a uniform course of study that would be evaluated through the utilization of international examinations. The efforts of these educators were supported financially through assistance from the Twentieth Century Fund and the Ford Foundation. As a result, the rigorous International Baccalaureate Program was developed to provide highly motivated secondary school students of diverse cultural and academic backgrounds with a pre-university course of study. The program was designed to equip the students with social, intellectual, and critical skills that would enable them to reach their potential as adults in our global society.
